Synopsis

This book emerges as the result of a research project carried out by an interdisciplinary group from the School of Basic Sciences, Technology and Engineering (ECBTI) and the School of Administrative, Accounting, Economic and Business Sciences (ECACEN) of the National Open and Distance University – UNAD. For two years, this team periodically conducted entrepreneurship workshops with students and faculty members of the university, addressing multiple competencies related both to business ideation processes and to the strengthening of established companies. Within these spaces, difficulties were identified in understanding the formulation of business models and the structuring of enterprises, as well as a lack of awareness of the responsibilities involved in becoming an entrepreneur. Based on these findings, the need arose to develop a research project aimed at proposing tools for the training of entrepreneurs.

This book presents the different results achieved throughout the development of the research project entitled “Entrepreneurship Methodology for the Promotion of Innovation and Business Creation by the University Community in the UNAD Zona Centro Bogotá Cundinamarca.” Initially, the conceptual framework surrounding university entrepreneurship is presented, articulated with agile methodologies that can be implemented to promote more competitive and flexible enterprises in the face of uncertain environments such as those currently experienced.

Subsequently, the results of an exploratory research study are presented within the conceptual framework of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). Since 2016, GEM has included in its analyses for Colombia the entrepreneurial pipeline proposed by Varela¹ and Soler (2013)², which illustrates the process through which an entrepreneur, starting from the motivation to undertake a venture, becomes a consolidated business owner after passing through a series of stages necessary to achieve this goal. Based on this pipeline, a diagnostic study was developed to characterize the entrepreneurial population in the Zona Centro Bogotá Cundinamarca of the National Open and Distance University – UNAD, serving as a fundamental input for the generation of strategies aimed at strengthening the success of entrepreneurial initiatives while minimizing the dropout of entrepreneurs in their efforts to become consolidated business owners.

Among the strategies proposed in response to the identified needs—and considering that entrepreneurship training in this project takes place within a virtual and distance education environment—the development of a technological tool is proposed to integrate the researched concepts and support autonomous learning, as well as the monitoring of the entrepreneurial pathway. Through an initial prototype, a platform is proposed to manage the entrepreneurial pathway of the target population across the different stages proposed in the entrepreneurial pipeline, articulating various agile methodologies for learning the competencies required for these transitions.

Finally, this book consolidates, in its four chapters, each of the results achieved and seeks to serve as a source of information for the formulation of new research proposals that contribute to addressing the multiple needs and challenges faced by entrepreneurs when initiating a business project.
