On the Fragmentation of Identity and its Reconstruction Through Philosophical Writing with Persons Deprived of Liberty from the Sogamoso Penitentiary and Prison

Ingrid Victoria Sarmiento Aponte,

Synopsis

In this chapter I seek to delve deeper into the notion of “broken identity”, one of the greatest discoveries that I have obtained listening to the stories that the Persons Deprived of Liberty in the Sogamoso Penitentiary and Prison Establishment tell about themselves. Their stories frequently contain references to what they were and are no longer, their uncertainty about who they are now, and how they perceive themselves differently than their loved ones, their community, and society at large believe. On the other hand, I emphasize the role of philosophical writing as a tool that contributes
to the construction of new identities in contexts of deprivation of liberty, being a central resource within the BOECIO International Project, which is carried out in the Sogamoso prison from the year 2024. Through different writing exercises, it is understood how this break in identity can also be seen as an opportunity for its reconstruction, where the acceptance of the new reality and the pain that it entails becomes a driving force for he personal growth and the transformation of wounds into valuable lessons. This perspective aligns with the thinking of authors such as María Zambrano, who suggests that awareness of fragmentation can facilitate the search for meaning in the key of self-knowledge.
