Introduction to Social Research at UNAD

Gloria Isabel Vargas Hurtado,

Synopsis

The first chapter introduces social research at the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD), highlighting its commitment to community management and social transformation in Colombia. UNAD, through the Comunidades de Interacción y Participación Académica y Social (Communities of Interaction and Academic and Social Participation, CIPAS in Spanish), fosters collaborative learning beyond the classroom, with a focus on creating knowledge applied to real-world contexts. These communities allow students, faculty, and members of society to co-create knowledge, addressing territorial issues and promoting the effective use of technological tools.

The chapter also emphasizes the importance of strengthening comprehensive education and shared responsibility between students and the university in generating an inclusive learning environment adapted to local realities. Finally, the four research pillars of UNAD are highlighted, preparing students to face contemporary challenges through a Smart Productive Work (TIP in Spanish) approach in alignment with the values of the colombianidad (Colombian identity).
