Coeducating from infancy to forever

Victoria Vázquez Verdera ,

Synopsis

This chapter analyzes how gender socialization from childhood reinforces inequality and how coeducation can be key to eradicating it. The author argues that the symbolic and cultural environment undervalues the femininity, reproducing stereotypes that impact children's identity construction. Coeducation is defended as an ethical and transforming project, which must be institutionalized to eliminate gender violence from the early stages.  The importance of the school curriculum, which has historically been androcentric, is analyzed. Inclusion of care practices, democratic values and community participation is also advocated. The author concludes that teaching equality and care is essential to building more just and peaceful societies.
