Chapter 7. Reflections on the approach to community mental health concerning to community-based rehabilitation

Diana Cecilia ¨Puentes Puentes, ; Marisol Bejarano Pelaez,

Synopsis

This chapter reflects on Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and the importance of building support networks to promote knowledge, collaborative work, and psychological well-being. CBR aims to ensure the rights of people with disabilities and their caregivers, typically family members, by prioritizing their mental health. Families, community groups, and community action boards play a key role in ensuring the inclusion and personal development of these individuals, strengthening their autonomy and employment opportunities.

The chapter also draws on the Colombian Ministry of Health's definition of CBR, which describes it as a socio-economic development strategy that promotes inclusion, fosters local leadership, and involves organizations of people with disabilities. This approach views the community as a fundamental resource for the rehabilitation process, aligned with development plans and current regulations to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Additionally, community psychology addresses the prevention and strengthening of psychological well-being, fostering transformations where adverse situations become growth opportunities. Authors such as Maritza Montero highlight the importance of identity and common goals in the community to facilitate the creation of support networks and public policies that enhance the quality of life and personal development of its members through CBR.
