Chapter 4. Challenges of community mental health within psychosocial accompaniment through the dimensions of well-being and human development articulated in the CASMCUNAD strategy.

Marisol Bejarano Peláez,

Synopsis

This chapter focuses on the challenges of community mental health within psychosocial accompaniment, exploring the dimensions of welfare and human development within the framework of the strategy of the Accompaniment Centers (CASMCUNAD). The main objective is to understand the processes of community self-management through the scope and relevance of psychological, subjective and social welfare in mental health care and human development in communities.

In order to achieve these objectives, a qualitative methodological approach was adopted that included documentary exploration and cartographic analysis. Six social cartographies of different types of communities were analyzed. This tool was used to understand the relationships between subjectivities and territories, as well as to interpret the territory from its physical and symbolic dimensions. Social mapping stands out as a means to record and interpret reality, allowing the triangulation of information and community experiences, and promoting the representation of the cultural identity, knowledge and customs of the communities.

The introduction of the chapter stresses the importance of studying the functioning of human beings, including their values, beliefs, culture and perception of the world, as well as their illnesses at the physical, psychological and social levels. In addition, the role of family and social systems and subsystems, and areas of individual and collective adjustment are highlighted in relation to human welfare and development linked to mental health. The intervention of national and international organizations in the monitoring and regulation of these concepts is mentioned, highlighting the historical evolution of the definition of mental health by the WHO.
