Synopsis

The continuous pursuit of maximizing ruminant production and reducing their negative effects on the environment has stimulated, in recent years, the development and implementation of various nutritional and animal feeding strategies. As a result of this optimization, considerable improvements have been achieved in terms of greater productive efficiency and compositional quality of ruminant-derived products.

These trends of "producing more with less," "producing cleanly," and "improving the nutritional quality" of ruminant-derived products have demanded, in recent years, greater intensity in transdisciplinarity. This implies that agricultural sciences are constantly seeking support from related sciences, such as basic sciences, including chemistry, biology, geology, statistics, mathematics, and pharmacy. Particularly in the case of chemical sciences, they provide fundamental tools in animal nutrition, for decision-making, from knowledge of the composition of feedstuffs (e.g., forages, concentrates, by-products, etc.), tissues (e.g., organs, muscles, and bones), and derived products (e.g., milk, meat, and other food products) from ruminants. Thus, chemistry has the potential to support both the primary link and the subsequent ones in the livestock production chain.

Specifically, instrumental analytical chemistry provides tools to understand the impact of adopted nutritional strategies or even the characteristics of the ruminant, in its nutrient metabolism and how this influences the quality of its products. In this sense, modern instrumental methods, especially chromatographic and spectroscopic methods, provide information in terms of the abundance and presence of organic compounds of interest, aiming to produce higher quality food with lower cost or environmental impact. However, specific books proposing the use of chromatographic techniques coupled with spectroscopic ones in the field of animal production are scarce and sometimes absent.

Therefore, with this publication, it is intended to provide a set of tools through the use of chemical-instrumental methods focused on the combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, which seek to provide diagnostic tools to optimize ruminant production. The material proposes various methodologies for the analysis of metabolites of interest for animal production in ruminal fluid and ruminant milk, as well as in silage, for this species.
