Synopsis

The project “Cravo Sur: Vital river: Strategies for the Conservation and Recovery of the Forests of the Middle and Lower Basin of the Cravo Sur River in Yopal, San Luis de Palenque and Orocue, Casanare” was led by the Fundación Palmarito Casanare and the Cunaguaro Foundation with the strategic partner of the CAZAO research group of the School of Agricultural, Animal, and Environmental Sciences (ECAPMA for its Spanish acronym) of the National Open and Distance University’s (UNAD for its Spanish acronym) Yopal Distance Education Center (CEAD for its Spanish acronym), headquarters for Casanare. This initiative was funded by Fondo Acción through the Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA). The book “The Challenge of Conservation and Production: Biodiversity and Productive Systems of the Middle and Lower basin of Cravo Sur River” was born because of the research and works carried out by researchers in this basin. The book corresponds to the expression of three concatenated aspects to show the reader the benefits of using the figure of conservation-production of the ecosystems of the middle and lower basin of the Cravo Sur River. The book highlights its extraordinary biodiversity, the productive systems present, and the conservation strategies proposed to mitigate the negative factors affecting the conservation of Cravo Sur river's landscapes. The book describes in detail the great biodiversity of the basin, more than 1000 species of flora, 400 species of birds, arthropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals of the middle and lower Cravo Sur basin. There are also chapters dedicated to felines and the red-footed tortoise (Chelonoidis carbonarius) in the Cravo Sur river’s basin and other Orinoco basins, ending with butterflies. A second part of the book is dedicated to describing the production systems, analyze the cattle farming, rice crops, environmental, social, and economic panorama of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) cultivation, small-scale fish production systems, and the current state of mining, highlighting the positive experiences of sustainable production and challenges ahead. Finally, conservation strategies are presented, relating experiences and initiatives that seek to strengthen territorial capacities (a powerful conservation tool in the Colombian Orinoco) described in the chapters on private initiative, aiming the conservation of the forests of the Cravo Sur River; the restoration of the middle and lower basin of the Cravo Sur river; the strengthening of local capacities. The book ends with the chapter on voluntary conservation agreements in the basin.
