Environmental citizenship, crisis of conventional agriculture and challenges for an agroecology oriented towards rural development

Martha Isabel Cabrera Otálora (ed),

Synopsis

This collective research volume, derived from research project PG202011 of the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD), brings together contributions from Colombian and Brazilian scholars examining the tensions between conventional agriculture and agroecology as an alternative framework for sustainable rural development. Across seven interconnected chapters, the book addresses the construction of environmental citizenship from an agroecological perspective in the municipality of Palmira; regional challenges for agroecology in agrarian reform settlements in Pernambuco, Brazil; the relationship between land tenure and rice production in Tolima; the dialogue between ancestral knowledge and new ruralities; peasant agroecology schools as spaces for community learning and knowledge exchange; the intersection of agroecology and climate change; and the crisis of the agro-industrial model as a catalyst for emerging environmental citizenship. The work critically engages hegemonic production models and frames agroecology—across its technical-scientific, socioeconomic, and ethical-political dimensions—as a robust pathway toward rural sustainability and the restoration of the relationship between society and nature.
