Synopsis

This research-based work examines the relationships between agricultural management practices and their effects on the health and sustainability of rural agroecosystems in Colombia, with emphasis on Valle del Cauca and Tolima. The Producción Sostenible Research Group at ECAPMA-UNAD brings together seven chapters addressing: the composition of functional soil microorganisms across different cropping systems; the relationship between agricultural land use and eutrophication in water treatment systems; soil mesofauna as an indicator of agroecosystem health; the role of springtails (Collembola) in organic matter transformation in coffee agroecosystems; low-cost agro-environmental technologies for soil organic matter management in industrial crops (sugarcane, maize, soybean); composting as a tool for organic waste valorization; and the use of plant fibres and agro-industrial residues in cement-based construction materials. The book offers an integrative view of the environmental externalities of conventional agriculture and proposes technology-based alternatives grounded in the simulation of natural ecosystem processes. Intended for researchers, students, farmers, and decision-makers in the agricultural and environmental sectors.
