Biotechnology, agrofuels and climate change : A critical perspective

Libia Esperanza Nieto Gómez, ; Reinaldo Giraldo Díaz, ; Óscar Emerson Zúñiga Mosquera,

Synopsis

The book “Biotechnology, agrofuels and climate change. A Critical Perspective” has a central objective: to unveil the hidden faces of an apparently altruistic discourse, such as the fight against global warming, and to warn of the dangers that one of its workhorses entails: the promotion of agrofuels (also called biofuels) and biotechnology. The book is an invitation to reflect on these aspects. Not to believe in an unobjectionable truth, but to clarify its scientific foundations and, above all, the interests behind this truth that has been constructed. For this task, the authors identify four aspects to problematize: i. the scientific unanimism surrounding global warming; ii. the immobilization that the notion of catastrophe can generate; iii. the importance of identifying differentiated responsibilities; and iv. the serious repercussions that the implementation of agrofuels, presented as the planet's saving formula, is entailing.
