Utopia and cultural transformation : An essay on the meaning of cultural action

Hernando Bernal Alarcon,

Synopsis

The current world situation with its great tensions and immense potentialities can be interpreted as the convergence and cohabitation of four great ideological tendencies that explain the development of modern societies, especially those of the Western type. Plato's thinking on democratic society was known as early as the 5th century B.C. and was later confirmed and updated by Thomas More (17th century), founder of the concept of UTOPIA and possibly the first to use it. From the 4th century onwards, the thought of St. Augustine, forger of the concept of the city of God as a successor to the city of man, became present and became the basis of the spirit of the West, especially in the transition from antiquity to the Renaissance. Parallel to Moro, Bacon constructed the utopian concept of scientific thought as a mechanism for the progress of peoples, which has had such an influence on the development of science and technology. Finally, from the mid-nineteenth century Marx lays the foundations of the dynamics and confrontation of the proletariat and capitalism with his critical position on the role of the social class as a generator of new alternatives for progress.
