Synopsis

Santa Marta 500 Years: Territory, Community, and Knowledge for the Future is a collective work commemorating five centuries of history in the city of Santa Marta, from an academic, territorial, and social perspective. It brings together significant contributions from professors, researchers, and community actors linked to the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD), who analyze the challenges, opportunities, and transformations the region has experienced across different dimensions of development.

Throughout its chapters, the book addresses key topics such as strengthening the social fabric, public health, inclusive education, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, territorial innovation, historical memory, cultural diversity, and citizen participation processes. These reflections are grounded in research, meaningful experiences, and social intervention processes developed by the academic schools and functional units of UNAD in Santa Marta, with a community-based and ethical commitment.

The work not only pays tribute to the city’s historical past but also proposes a forward-looking, critical, and transformative perspective toward its future. From a multidisciplinary approach, it outlines strategic planning pathways for the territory, in dialogue with local knowledge, citizenship, and institutions.

This book is a contribution to applied knowledge, valuable for decision-makers, researchers, students, and social leaders interested in local and regional development processes. In doing so, UNAD reaffirms its role as an agent of change, inclusion, and knowledge generation with social impact in the framework of Santa Marta’s 500th anniversary.
