Anaximander : Texts, Contexts, and Interpretations

Einar Iván Monroy Gutiérrez,

Synopsis

This study has aimed to present the testimonies and fragments attributed to Anaximander, ensuring a read from their context. To this end, on the one hand, the primary and most recent sources were collected, and on the other hand, the influence that the Miletus may have exerted on later authors was investigated.  As results, we have, on the one hand, although not in the same intensity and extension as other classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, that Anaximander was of significant consideration for Bruno, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Gadamer. On the other hand, we seek an interpretation that distances itself from the usual one, arguing that in Anaximander there is no metaphysical system in the strict sense nor as "henology" - the one as the origin of all that exists, from which being is derived (Plato, 1992, 16 c, 509 b) - or as ontology - the science of being as being, where the one is a predicate of being (Aristotle, 1994, I,2,1053b 25-29). It is concluded that what apeiron was nothing other than the physis itself, the indeterminate nature, a specular unity in which the opposites that intelligently govern it coincide.
