Synopsis

The book ‘Weaving Equality: Knowledge, Gender, and Diversity’ is based on the proposal to disseminate academic and research work developed by actors who are part of the Network of Higher Education Institutions for Gender Equality and Diversity - REDIES, which is made up of eleven higher education institutions: National Open and Distance University, University of Nariño, ESAP, Mariana University, CESMAG University, Minuto de Dios University Corporation, Catholic University of the South, Cooperative University of Colombia, San Martín University Foundation, Remington University Corporation, Antonio Nariño University Corporation.

Within the framework of REDIES' commitments, it is proposed that academic discussion resulting from research should contribute to cultivating a gender perspective within academic development, as well as highlighting issues that are present in everyday human interactions in cultural contexts such as ours. To this end, the book presents eight chapters that start from an understanding of gender, identify research findings and conclude by presenting an international overview.

Chapter One addresses the social construction of gender, presenting a general theoretical overview with the aim of generating reflections that will lead to proposals for a more just and pluralistic society that recognises the dignity of all ways of inhabiting the world.          The second chapter addresses micro-machismo in the classroom and at home, highlighting its relevance in everyday situations and proposing tools to identify it and understand its emotional, cognitive and social impacts.

The third chapter addresses the ethics of care in rural women, recognising their roles and showing the duality between caring and enduring as a way of supporting the family. The fourth chapter presents the results of a study that seeks to understand the phenomenon of violence against women in the unique context of Tumaco, a municipality located on the Pacific coast of Nariño. The fifth chapter addresses the results of a study that seeks to understand the psychological well-being and experiences of rural women who are also higher education students.

Moving on, chapter six presents an intergenerational analysis of the process of recognition of homosexuality in university contexts, a rigorous review based on research to take a critical stance on the contrasts between reality and regulatory scope.

Moving on to chapter seven, gender, diversity, and human rights in the 21st century are presented from a state-of-the-art perspective that highlights the limitations of efforts to achieve gender equality and human rights.

Finally, chapter eight presents a state-of-the-art review of protocols for addressing gender-based violence in higher education institutions in Colombia, which undoubtedly constitutes an interesting input for understanding and reviewing the relevant management of this issue within the university.
