Synopsis

This work emerges from a rigorous, situated, and highly socially valuable research process, which examines the social representations that adolescents construct regarding suicide attempts. This work uses a mixed methodological approach and a critical, participatory, and contextualized perspective. Its publication is essential not only because of the relevance of the topic addressed, but also because of the gap in the academic literature regarding the meanings attributed by adolescents themselves to this phenomenon, especially in school settings with high social vulnerability, such as those in the municipality of Neiva, Huila.

The relevance of this publication is based on the urgent need to understand suicide attempts as a complex, multicausal problem deeply linked to social, familial, and cultural factors. Recognizing that statistics are insufficient to address the causes and expressions of psychological suffering in youth, this work proposes a comprehensive approach that articulates psychometric tools with narrative analysis, allowing for a situated and in-depth reading of the experiences, meanings, and relationships that shape suicide risk in adolescence.

The book also contributes to the fields of mental health, community psychology, and education by offering concrete input for the design of preventive interventions from a rights-based perspective and based on the recognition of adolescents as subjects of knowledge, agents of transformation, and protagonists of their own stories. The information contained in the book is useful for professionals, researchers, teachers, caregivers, educational institutions, and stakeholders in the health system, as it allows for the identification of protective and risk factors, the promotion of psychosocial support strategies, and the strengthening of support networks in contexts
