Colombianitud

Jaime Alberto Leal Afanador,

Synopsis

"Colombianitud" is a term that, although not yet officially coined by the Royal Academy of the Language or the Dictionary of Colombianisms, manages to perfectly capture the integration of diversities that defines the character, strength, expectations, virtues, and even weaknesses of those born in this homeland.

To better understand the benefits and challenges that this implies, and above all, to boost the pride of being Colombian with a view to consolidating—in the medium and long term—a prosperous nation with widespread well-being, this text begins with a historical and documented analysis. This analysis promotes essential keys to answering a fundamental question from a cultural and experiential perspective: Are we the result of the mix of what we inherited from the aboriginal peoples, the distinctive mark of the Afro-Colombian communities, and the customs—good or bad—that we learned or were imposed on us by the Spanish conquerors? A mix that has been molded in the stages before and after the cry for independence.

The author's experience, training, and research, as the rector of the university with the largest presence and student coverage in all corners of the country, allow him to gauge how an inclusive, universal, and high-quality education could be the key to strengthening the idiosyncrasy of being Colombian, for the good of all and especially of future generations.
