Socio-environmental conflict : struggles and resistances from the south

Synopsis

The book Socio-environmental Conflict: Struggles and Resistances from the South gathers some of the research conducted by professors who are members of the Red Iberoamericana de Investigación en Conflictos Socioambientales y Justicia de Género - RIICSA (Ibero-American Network of Research on Socio-environmental Conflicts and Gender Justice). This work has aimed to present different emerging theoretical-practical frameworks with different interdisciplinary approaches and perspectives, focusing on the study of environmental issues and their connection to the defense of human rights, the implications of the hegemonic development model and the experiences of socio-environmental conflict. These include struggles for environmental justice and reflections on the potential of socio-environmental movements and their peaceful resistances as drivers of socio-ecological transformations. These movements reveal the relations and tensions of colonial and extractivist power, promoting the creation of environmental peace spaces in territories and recognizing other subjectivities in this planetary process. The book addresses similar realities, phenomena and issues found in distant and different geographies that converge in resistance practices from the Global South, defending various forms of life and cultures that cohabit territories and natural ecosystems, in the face of imminent threats to eradicate them with the veil of ignorance and arrogance of the anthropocentric approach. This approach uses a colonial matrix that represents an extractivist economic development model, which is leading us to an inevitable ecological planetary collapse. Considering the above, this book invites readers to move from theory to action and take up the challenge of those who have embarked on paths of resistance and re-existence from different places of enunciation. This book is of interest not only to academics but also contributes to generating critical mass within civil society and among decision-makers to promote the exercise of active citizenship committed to protecting and caring for all forms of life and cultures that coexist in this Community of Life.
