CHAPTER 2. CIVILIZATIONAL CRISIS OF THOUGHT: REFLECTIONS ON THE SUSTAINABLE DISCOURSES OF ENRIQUE LEFF

Jorge Eduardo de Jesús León Alonso, ; Alexander Salazar Montoya, ; Belky Josefina Rodríguez Zuleta, ; Damileth Dearmas Duarte,

Synopsis

Are we facing an environmental, civilizational or thought crisis? In his sustainable discourses Leff chooses the latter. The author affirms that the environmental crisis is the result of human knowledge on the forms of appropriation of the world and nature through power relations and that this crisis is not environmental but a crisis of thought and of the forms of knowledge with which we have built and destroyed the world and our ways of life.
The problem of rationality of the human being comes from its epistemological bases. Leff argues that the looming ecological disaster is related rather to a way of constructing knowledge in the Western world and to the inability to adequately assume the challenges posed by the environmental problem. Furthermore, there is a great lack of interest in reconciling and balancing economic activity, the renewal times of the planet's natural resources and their indiscriminate uses.
