Historical and didactic foundations for innovation in clinical simulation in health sciences : an experience in distance education

Nelson Ricardo Ávila Meneses, ; Olga Lucía Rodríguez Puerto, ; Diana Paola Figueroa Córdoba,

Synopsis

This essay offers a broad look at the history, theoretical underpinnings, and didactic strategies of clinical simulation in the health sciences, with a focus on hybrid education. Through a historical review, the author explores the key advances that have allowed clinical simulation to evolve from its earliest forms to become a fundamental tool in the education of health care professionals. The text offers a detailed analysis of pedagogical models applied in virtual environments, highlighting how educational innovation and clinical simulation have transformed teaching methods from traditional education to remote, virtual, distance and hybrid modalities.

The book is based on the experience of the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD) in Colombia, offering practical examples of how clinical simulation can be integrated into virtual education to improve the technical and decision-making skills of health sciences students. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the reader learns how this methodology not only facilitates learning in the health sciences, but also encourages the development of innovation and adaptability in non-traditional (face-to-face) educational settings.

In light of the above, this paper becomes a valuable tool for educators, researchers and students who seek to understand the importance of clinical simulation in health sciences education, especially in hybrid education contexts, and how its implementation can contribute to the development of professionals with more and better competencies to face the challenges of the real world.
