Synopsis

This book consolidates results derived from the research project: "Generation of added value and technological adoption for the transformation of plantain (Musa Paradisiaca L.) crop residues in municipalities of the department of Tolima - BPIN Code: 2021000100302" financed by the Science, Technology and Innovation Fund of the General System of Royalties and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Minciencias).

The paper "Sustainability and added value in the cultivation of plantain (Musa paradisiaca L.) in the department of Tolima, Colombia: Environmental Assessment, Psychosocial Management and Biotransformation of Byproducts" compiles methodologies for the evaluation of the environmental impact of plantain cultivation, assesses the psychosocial aspects from the community experience, and analyses the comprehensive use and the biodegradation of byproducts.

The book is divided into four chapters. The first is entitled Methodologies for environmental impact assessment and baseline development: A case study of banana cultivation in the department of Tolima, Colombia, and highlights the need to evaluate the environmental impacts of agricultural practices and establishes a landmark for future analyses and evaluations. This methodological approach provides essential information to identify and mitigate negative impacts, promote sustainable agricultural practices and support decision making, thus strengthening the capacity to adapt to climate change and improve the quality of life of communities.

The second chapter, Psychosocial management in the generation of added value in banana cultivation: approach from the community experience, identified urgent needs for comprehensive psychosocial interventions in the community. This approach promotes the social and emotional well-being of farmers, improving their adaptive capacity and resilience, fostering social cohesion, active participation and a sense of belonging, resulting in more sustainable and efficient farming practices.

The third chapter, on the Integral use of plantain by-products for the development of bio-based composite materials, describes a set of processes on bunches and pseudostems of four varieties of plantain (Dominico, Hartón, Dominico Hartón and Africano) from the municipalities of Casabianca and Herveo, department of Tolima, to obtain starch and lignocellulosic fibers. This approach is important for sustainability and the circular economy, transforming agricultural waste into valuable resources, reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. It also promotes the creation of new market opportunities in the bioproducts sector.

The fourth and final chapter, Analysis of plantain residue biodegradation: perspectives and challenges, consolidates important results related to comprehensive biodegradability assessments of banana crop residues. This analysis allows us to optimize processes to minimize waste and emissions, promoting cleaner agricultural practices. In addition, it identifies challenges such as decomposition efficiency and integration with existing technologies, contributing to the circular economy and improving sustainability in banana cultivation.

This document represents a valuable resource for the academic community, professionals, experts, technicians and the community in general, who are the stakeholder in the areas of environmental management, community psychology and bioeconomics. The book is instrumental in approaching agricultural sustainability from multiple perspectives, encompassing environmental assessment, essential for understanding and mitigating crop impacts, and psychosocial management, which improves the well-being and cohesion of farming communities. In addition, it focuses on the biotransformation and biodegradation of by-products, promoting the integral use of waste for the creation of bioproducts. This comprehensive approach not only pushes for more sustainable agricultural practices, but also generates added economic and social value, contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
