Synopsis

This paper explores suicide as a growing mental health problem in this Colombian department. The introduction highlights the importance of this phenomenon and its social impact, while the theoretical framework encompasses various theories, such as interpersonal psychological theory, motivational-volitional theory, and the three-step theory, which explain the factors that contribute to suicide, such as hopelessness and lack of belonging. The methodology includes an analysis of epidemiological and sociodemographic data from Tolima, identifying risk factors such as age, sex and marital status. The results reveal a suicide risk profile in the region, with a high incidence among young people and people from vulnerable contexts. The conclusions emphasize the need to develop effective interventions and public policies for suicide prevention, adapted to the local characteristics of Tolima, and stress the importance of continued research in this field to improve regional mental health.
