Beyond barriers : experiences of students with disabilities

Nadia del Pilar Rodríguez Borda,

Synopsis

This document presents the findings of a field study conducted with students with disabilities enrolled in the virtual modality at the Central Zone Boyacá of the Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia (UNAD). The results are presented in three chapters.

The first chapter provides the study's contextual and theoretical framework, including the problem statement, justification, conceptual and theoretical framework, and methodology, among others. The second chapter focuses on the narratives of the participants' life stories, highlighting their main characteristics and offering brief descriptions of each participant and their perspectives on their condition. It also presents results gathered through semi-structured interviews, emphasizing aspects such as their personal descriptions of their disabilities, self-perception, views of their environments, and experiences with their teaching and learning of virtual education at UNAD. Here, participants tell lived experiences with both professors and peers, as well as the University's efforts to uphold the rights of students with disabilities (SWD). The third chapter discusses the results, providing an academic analysis of participants' perceptions. It reviews determinations and regulations implemented in Colombia to support SWDs, includes national, departmental, and municipal statistics, and offers a brief reflection on the role of nursing staff in addressing disability as a public health issue.
