Chapter 4. What happens in the brain after death?

Julio César Ramírez Vargas,

Synopsis

The text explores the neurological mysteries that occur in the brain during and after death, combining scientific data with real-life accounts of near-death experiences (NDEs). It begins by revealing the dark past of anatomical studies, when in the 19th century “resurrectionists” stole cadavers to supply medical schools, a practice that even had macabre influences in Colombia.

The core of the analysis is a pioneering study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience (2022), where the brain activity of a patient during death was recorded for the first time. Neuroscientists observed a significant increase in gamma waves (associated with memory) within 30 seconds after cardiac arrest, suggesting that the brain may be reliving important memories, which would explain the common NDE accounts of “watching life go by.”

The text describes eight (8) recurring characteristics of NDEs (extra-corporeal experiences, encounters with deceased loved ones, luminous tunnel sensation), present in diverse cultures and ages. Although some medical theories attribute these phenomena to cerebral hypoxia or endorphin release, the author emphasizes that no conventional explanation can fully explain these experiences, particularly in cases such as that of a woman with congenital blindness who, during her NDE, was able to “see” her hospital environment.

The work raises profound questions about the relationship between consciousness and the brain, challenging the traditional notion that brain death underlines the absolute end of the subjective experience. A fascinating scientific journey to the frontiers of death.
