Chapter 2. Mind-body connection

Julio César Ramírez Vargas,

Synopsis

The chapter explores the mind-body connection, a topic that has evolved from being considered “esoteric” to being validated by modern science. From Hippocrates to Descartes, this relationship has historically been debated, but modern disciplines such as Psycho-Neuro-Endocrine-Immunology (PNEI) demonstrate how the nervous, endocrine and immune systems interact with the mind to maintain health or generate disease. Emotions, stress or beliefs can alter this homeostasis, manifesting in physical symptoms (pain, fatigue, etc.).

The “mind-body loops” are highlighted: chronic negative thoughts affect physical health, while practices such as meditation, yoga, tai chi and qi gong, endorsed by the WHO, restore the balance. These integrative therapies, based on ancient cultures, but scientifically supported, improve conditions such as depression, stress and chronic diseases.

The text emphasizes that optimal health requires harmony between physical and mental conditions, challenging the traditional view that separates the two. Current neuroscience confirms that the (intangible) mind modifies cellular biology, demonstrating that wellness and disease are holistic processes. Thus, the chapter proposes a holistic approach to health, combining science and non-pharmacological therapies.
