Establishing the differences between academic entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs in Colombia

Jesús Rafael Fandiño Isaza, ; Vladimir Jhosmell Baquero Márquez,

Synopsis

This chapter begins with documentary information concepts about the academic entrepreneur as an actor of economic and social development, and the contribution they make to the processes of business alternatives and labor insertion, driving technological development and scientific knowledge. The qualities and characteristics of the entrepreneur in universities are mentioned, highlighting aspects such as flexibility of ideas, vision for business improvement, entrepreneurial spirit, adaptability to change, agile thinking when making decisions, and acting within the framework of professional ethics.

Likewise, some factors that hinder academic entrepreneurship processes are presented, such as the comfort zone that students have upon entering university, which sometimes prevents them from thinking beyond the academic realm, the lack of financial resources to carry out the start of a business plan, and motivation regarding the moral and professional support that comes from academic and family institutions. Finally, factors or variables that GEM considers in its study are shown as impediments to carrying out any entrepreneurial activity in Colombia, affecting competitiveness and regional and national growth as part of sustainable development.
