Globalization, Localization, Competitiveness, and Productive Specialization : an Empirical Analysis for Colombia

Synopsis

The work presented aims, first, to serve as a guide for students in the fields of international trade, economics, international relations, and national and international socioeconomic history. Second, it seeks to contribute to the socioeconomic debate regarding the efficiency of trade agreements, whether there is a wear or erosion of successive governments in the implementation of economic development policies at the departmental level, and whether the flagship branch of international trade activity promoted by the current government is harmful to the environment, among other issues. To address these questions, this book is structured into five chapters that provide an invaluable source of reference for the general public (both national and international), covering processes of economic liberalization and specialized industrialization, as well as what is defined as globalization and geolocation. Global and regional competitiveness is analyzed, followed by an examination of Colombia’s 32 departments by breaking down their localization coefficients and productive specialization in order to determine, through an empirical study, whether each specialized branch of economic activity generates the necessary employment in each department. Finally, through another empirical exercise, the book contrasts whether this socioeconomic process is positive by analyzing the exports and imports generated, taking into account both the destination country and the type of product exported, as well as the country of origin and the type of product imported.
