The Rebels’ History : Historical Thinking of the FARC’s Ex-Combatants

Juan Carlos Ramos Pérez,

Synopsis

This book analyzes the historical thinking characteristics of the ex-combatants of the FARC-EP guerrilla concerning the recent past in Colombia. The study’s methodology was based on developing a teaching material that explored six dimensions of historical thinking: relevance, epistemology and evidence, continuity and change, progress and decline, empathy, perspective-taking, and historical agency. Narrative productions were also analyzed through a qualitative approach from the grounded theory.

The study of historical thinking and its dimensions can give us a reasonably approximate idea of how a representation of the past is set up and serves as an interpretative framework for the present. From this perspective, the research states that the importance given to historical facts by the ex-combatants is strongly conditioned by the capacity to justify their revolutionary struggle. This relation between the past and the present is stronger in those groups where a specific understanding of the past mediates social action, thus explaining that, for ex-combatants, their perception of the past serves as a crucial comprehensive framework for understanding the present reality.
