Boyaca’s women, Politics, Participation, Election

Olga Natalie Manrique Abril,

Synopsis

In 1957, through suffrage and derived from the plebiscite, women in Colombia acquired the right to participate in democracy. However, Colombia is a country that has assumed political participation as a quota, a law, and an obligation for the parties rather than as equity or equality, as it has been called.  Such a situation has been referenced in different studies of political participation in the different branches of public power; however, political participation in positions by popular vote is still scarce in many departments of the country. As for the case that we will investigate, only five years ago, it began to take relevance due to a reform that forced political parties to include women in the party lists of candidates for councils, assemblies, and House of Representatives, with only a quota of 30% of the total number of candidates.
