Synopsis

This book is a joint effort of researchers from Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia and the research seedbed Estudios Sociales del Desarrollo y los Territorios (Social Studies of Development and Territories in English) of the Sociology program of the National Open and Distance University (UNAD, for its Spanish acronym), which seeks to identify the associated factors that drive or discourage political participation in the population of their countries; with a multidisciplinary vision that studies this social phenomenon through disciplines such as economics, political science, psychology, and other sciences contributing to knowledge.

Latin American democracies face the enormous and permanent challenge of generating mechanisms that allow political participation of their citizens; understanding the factors associated with such participation is the challenge proposed in the book, which addresses political participation in two approaches: one linked to electoral political participation, one of the most common exercises of rights in Latin America, complementing it by a second approach linked to the socio-political participation of citizens in social organizations.

Both approaches to political participation allow the reader to understand the probabilities of each of the factors or dimensions associated with political participation, both at the level of individual characteristics of the citizen and the factors associated with socioeconomic contexts, which end up affecting in higher proportion the decision to participate either in a political electoral process or in a political social organization.
