Implications of Having Two or More Automobiles: A Mobility Problem

Milton Fernando Angulo Camargo,

Synopsis

The objective of this research is to identify what are the implications of Bogota citizens in the decision to have two or more cars of private use. Understanding this decision as one of the most relevant aspects in terms of mobility, this being the one that characterizes the development and well-being of a community, thanks to which it offers us the possibility and ease of moving from one place to another to
carry out different activities (how to work, study, among others), improving the quality of life of people, it should be noted that although this research was carried out for Bogotá, it is clear that the big cities of the world present this great problem. This is why Bogotá being a capital city occupies the third place of the biggest problems facing the city regarding mobility (Editorial Bogotá, 2015). This big problem is related to the theory of the tragedy of the common to identify the implications that affect the decision to have two or more vehicles, an estimation exercise was carried out using a probit model based on the microdata from the Multipurpose Survey for Bogotá 2011 and 2014. Followed by an analytical development descriptive where the exogenous variable was contrasted with respect to each one of the endogenous variables by means of tables and graphs. Among the most relevant results is that: economic facilities, a higher educational level, being married or in a free union, own housing and garage are factors that make it easier for people to have two or more of a car. Finally, a proposal that encourages the shared use of trips to work, study among others is shown. All within the legal framework under the transport ministry guidelines.
