Synopsis

Fundamentals of Human and Animal Cytogenetics is an academic work that offers a comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the study of chromosomes, covering both its applications in human clinical practice and animal production.

The book is structured into four well-differentiated chapters. It begins with a brief historical context that traces the most important milestones in cytogenetics, from the early work of Walther Flemming in 1882 to the post-genomic era and the development of techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). The second chapter addresses the fundamentals of the cell cycle, its checkpoints, and the necessary conditions for cell cultures, including physicochemical aspects such as pH, ionic strength, and gas concentration. The third chapter focuses on the human karyotype, explaining the morphology, classification, and nomenclature of chromosomes, as well as the main numerical and structural abnormalities (trisomies, monosomies, translocations, inversions, deletions, etc.). Finally, the fourth chapter applies this knowledge to animal cytogenetics, with sections dedicated to cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats, and includes a detailed protocol for lymphocyte culture and obtaining metaphase chromosomes.

The book stands out for its didactic approach, with numerous figures, tables, and examples that facilitate the understanding of complex concepts. It is aimed at students and professionals in biological sciences, veterinary sciences, animal science, medicine, and related fields, as well as laboratory technicians interested in implementing or deepening cytogenetic techniques. Undoubtedly, it constitutes a valuable resource for both teaching and applied research in genetics and animal reproduction.
